All I Got

Now that the number of eyes scanning these pages has dwindled, the anticipatory jitters have subsided, annoyed entrants are all done venting here and there, stickers have been appropriately stuck, and the sought after have all returned home (some with a mighty hangover) after their whirlwind tour of Portland, I’d just like to say this…

I entered W+K Seeking and all I got was INSPIRED! Hooray!

As things go, I consider that quite a prize.

I have asked myself tons of times, “what is it about this seeking thing that had everyone so fired up?” Was it a plane ticket? Perhaps. Some recognition? Very likely because that is a nice thing. A job? Maybe, but W+K never said that’s what they were offering. “Prizes and adventure”, but not a job…not for certain, anyway. It was simply an enticing allusion. For me personally, it was the enticing ILLUSION that propelled me and my pdf toward the send button. I got so darned excited to make something, ANYTHING…because someone asked me to without any strings attached. Someone I had never heard of and will likely never know. Considering that, I see that this was more about me already having the desire, albeit a little buried, to create something. Stumbling upon “seeking” was a happy accident but an essential green light. All the other stuff – the idea of a new job, a cool office, creative freedom, all that swell recognition, applause, thumbs up, high fives, and enough cheddar to finally get me that ’66 Ford Econoline van – all just illusionary fluff. Valuable fluff. Fluff in my head, fabricated and fabulous, that pushed me down the 20 page pdf path. Inspirational fluff. To that, I say “Thanks. Thank you imagination.” Without you I may have never seeked to be sought, never made a tshirt that never sold, never started a blog, and never been so pleasantly, happily distracted by all the conversations to which I am now privy. Damn, I’m inspired by so many inspired people!

Truth be told, I have no idea what it’s like to work at a place like W+K and have only recently even considered it. Maybe those folks work ‘til 3 a.m. every morning for 364 days, then have a big boozin’ blowout on the 365th. The latter being certainly not a bad thing but that could seriously reduce one’s opportunities for sleep, sex, and reality TV. Or, perhaps it’s a never-ending Econoline road trip with GPS, a life-time iPhone contract, all-you-can-eat taquitos and free gas (ok…taquitos would certainly give you free gas, wouldn’t they?)! I may never know.

I will, however, continue to make some more stuff, pay more attention and be hurled forward by my newly rediscovered inspiration…even if no one asks me to.
